Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

People engage in self-injurious behaviors such as cutting, burning, skin picking or hair pulling for a wide variety of reasons but it usually is done as a way to cope with overwhelming feelings that are sometimes hard to name.  Self-injury often offers a temporary sense of relief and a way to cope but, unfortunately, it also tends to work less well over time and people find they need to do it more often or more intensely to feel the same relief.  Counseling can offer a way to develop other, healthier coping mechanisms and ease the internal pain more effectively.
